Ukraine may be a large country in Eastern Europe known for its Orthodox churches, Black Sea coastline and forested mountains. Its capital, Kiev, features the gold domed St. Sophia’s Cathedral, with 11th century mosaics and frescoes. Overlooking the Dnieper is that the Kiev Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, a Christian pilgrimage site housing Scythian tomb relics and catacombs containing mummified Orthodox monks. The territory of recent Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BC. During the center Ages, the world was a key center of East Slavic culture, with the powerful state of Kievan Rus’ forming the idea of Ukrainian identity. Following its fragmentation within the 13th century, the territory was contested, ruled and divided by a spread of powers, including the Polish–Lithuanian Common wealth, Austria Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Russia. A Cossack republic emerged and prospered during the 17th and 18th centuries, but its territory was eventually split between Poland and therefore the Russian Empire. Within the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, a Ukrainian national movement for self determination emerged and therefore the internationally recognized Ukrainian People’s Republic was declared on 23 June 1917. After war II the western a part    of Ukraine merged into the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and therefore the whole country became a neighborhood of the Soviet Union.
